Supporting a colleague in crisis can feel daunting, but acting quickly and calmly can make a real difference.
If someone is in immediate danger
- Call 999 straight away and ask for an ambulance.
- If safe to do so, stay with the person until help arrives.
- You can also take them to your nearest A&E department if that feels more appropriate.
If they cannot wait for a GP appointment
- Call NHS 111 (free, 24/7) and choose the mental health option.
- A trained adviser will ask questions and direct you to the best local support.
- This service is for urgent mental or physical health concerns when you’re unsure what to do.
Be prepared as a manager
Having the right information to hand can help you act quickly and confidently:
- Keep emergency contacts up to date for all staff.
- Know your organisation’s safeguarding policies and escalation routes.
- Keep crisis resources somewhere accessible – for example, the MindWell crisis sheet, Leeds Crisis Card, and the How are you feeling? leaflet (available on our Order printed materials page). These can be shared with staff or displayed in common areas.
