Purple logo saying Mental Health Foundation: Mental Health Awareness Week 12-18 May 2025

This year’s theme for Mental Health Awareness Week is ‘Community’, and the Mental Health Foundation is encouraging everyone to celebrate the power of connection and togetherness.

At MindWell, we wanted to spotlight one of Leeds’ most inclusive and inspiring community assets: Leeds Libraries. With 37 libraries across the city – and thousands of books available to borrow in person and online – there are so many ways to engage, connect, learn, and lift your spirits.

Whether you’re looking to improve your digital skills, meet new people, access wellbeing services, or simply escape into a good book, there’s something for everyone.

But with so many books to choose from… where do you start?

We asked the MindWell team and our volunteer champions to share some of their favourite feel-good reads – books that made them smile, reflect, or simply feel a bit better. Every title here is available through Leeds Libraries. Some are funny, others insightful, all are chosen with care.

Our reading picks for wellbeing

Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

At 3 a.m., Elizabeth Gilbert finds herself crying on the bathroom floor. On paper, she has everything – a marriage, a house, a plan to start a family – but inside, she’s lost. Her journey to rediscover joy and balance takes her to Italy, India and Bali, through food, meditation and moments of personal transformation. A warm, hopeful read about listening to your inner voice.

I Had a Black Dog by Matthew Johnstone

This illustrated book powerfully captures what it’s like to live with depression – and how recovery can begin.

“When I’ve experienced depression, this book has been a helpful reminder of how it can affect every part of my life. I always remember the black dog sitting on the kite string, or the black dog-shaped glasses. And of course, the way the dog shrinks and fades as wellbeing improves.”

Lost Connections by Johann Hari

Why are so many of us feeling low or anxious? In this compassionate, evidence-based book, Hari argues that disconnection – from meaningful work, relationships, and a sense of purpose – lies at the root. A hopeful and deeply thoughtful read for anyone looking to better understand mental health.

Peppa’s Big Feelings (Peppa Pig)

Mental health matters at every age. This gentle story helps young children name and talk about emotions like anger, worry, and sadness – with help from Peppa and George, of course! A brilliant resource for starting early conversations about feelings and wellbeing at home.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

A simple, powerful fable about following your dreams and listening to your heart.

“It definitely made me feel good and helped me reflect on life choices and future goals.”

The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh

A spellbinding fantasy for teens and young adults. Mina dives into the sea to save her brother – and finds herself in a magical realm of gods and spirits. A moving tale of bravery, love and rewriting your story – perfect for anyone who needs a reminder of their inner strength

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

What if you could see how life might have turned out if you’d made different choices? Nora Seed gets that chance in a mystical library between life and death. A beautiful reminder that the life you have might be more meaningful than you think.

“At times when I feel trapped or disappointed, it’s helpful to remember this story and the lessons Nora learns.”

Us by David Nicholls

When Douglas’s wife announces she’s leaving, he plans one last family holiday to win her back and reconnect with their son. A heartfelt and often funny story about love, loss and second chances.

Vagabonds! by Eloghosa Osunde

Set in Lagos, this poetic and bold novel gives a voice to those often unseen – queer people, outcasts, spirits and wanderers. Bold, challenging, and ultimately uplifting, it’s a story of resistance, strength and finding connection in unexpected places.
