2 people are at a big table covered in origami paper, colouring pages, pens and paper owls. Jane, a woman with a light skin tone, short red hair and glasses is leaning over the table drawing with a black pen. A child with long blonde hair, a light skin tone, glasses and a top with lots of pastel colours is decorating her own paper owl.
Artist Jane Gibson leading the owl-making workshop at Fire Engine Day

MindWell visited the Old Fire Station at Gipton for Fire Engine Day on 17 June, taking our Give a Hoot campaign to Gipton. Visitors young and old and dropped by our stall to make origami owls and share their wishes for the future of Leeds.

This free family fun event invited local people to see memorabilia from the 1930’s fire station, which is now a thriving community hub in East Leeds. Lots of visitors enjoyed the vintage and modern fire engines and joined in activities at stalls from a variety of groups and organisations.

The MindWell team thought it would be great to meet locals and share our Give a Hoot campaign with different age groups. We had a brilliant day, children loved the owl workshop and we chatted to parents and other stall holders. And of course saw the fire engines! The Old Fire Station is an amazing community hub, so it was great to be involved.

We launced our Give a Hoot campaign as part of the #1001Stories celebration for older people at Leeds Playhouse this spring. We asked people to make owls for our wish tree and share their hope for Leeds.

We’re over a quarter of the way to our 1000 owl total for #GiveAHoot and we plan to pop-up with our stall at more locations or events over the next few months. If you see us, drop in and make an owl!
