What will I be doing as a volunteer?

As a MindWell volunteer, you will play a crucial role in raising awareness and promoting mental health and wellbeing services across Leeds. Your tasks may include:

  • Attending and representing MindWell at events.
  • Distributing promotional materials.
  • Delivering or assisting with training sessions.
  • Creating and delivering presentations.
  • Building relationships and public speaking.
  • Conducting research to identify new outreach opportunities.
  • Creating content for sharing on our social media channels.

How much time do I need to commit?

We ask for a minimum commitment of 3 hours a month, but we’re flexible. We’ll work with you to match your availability to the right role. We hope you’ll stay with us for at least 2 months, but we also welcome those who can only volunteer short-term.

What if I have limited availability?

We understand that everyone’s schedule is different. Our volunteer roles offer flexibility, and we will do our best to accommodate your availability.  Whether you need specific times to fit around school, university terms, or other commitments, we’ll work with you to find a schedule that suits you.

What if my physical or mental health makes it difficult to volunteer regularly?

As a volunteer, you will be under no contractual obligation to attend regularly, but in some roles, reliability is more important. If you think your physical or mental health may affect your ability to attend regularly or on time, please mention this on the Expression of Interest form or get in touch by email if you would like to discuss any concerns you have before applying. Some of our roles can be worked from home and can be done as and when you are feeling well.

What skills do I need?

We’re looking for volunteers who are:

  • Caring and compassionate
  • Motivated and positive
  • Committed and reliable
  • Collaborative and communicative
  • Flexible and open to learning

Don’t worry if you don’t match all these qualities perfectly. We provide training and support to help you grow.

Will my expenses be covered?

Yes, we reimburse all reasonable and approved expenses related to your volunteer work, including travel and meals during longer shifts.

Will volunteering affect my benefits?

No, volunteering does not affect your benefits. However, it’s a good idea to inform your benefits advisor when you start volunteering.

What support will I receive?

MindWell provides:

  • A full induction and office tour.
  • All necessary training and equipment.
  • Regular one-on-one meetings with your supervisor.
  • Access to ongoing eLearning and mental health resources.

Can I leave if it’s not the right fit?

Of course. We want your volunteer experience to be positive and rewarding. If you’re considering leaving, we encourage you to discuss any concerns with us first. You can also check out our suggestions for other volunteering opportunities.

Why isn’t volunteering paid?

Volunteering is a great way to gain experience and demonstrate commitment. While it’s unpaid, it often leads to paid opportunities in the future.

Do you offer work experience or internships?

We’re currently focused on volunteer roles, but if you’re interested in work experience or internships, please get in touch to discuss potential opportunities.

What’s your policy on DBS checks?

You may be required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check depending on the role and whether it involves working with vulnerable people. Having a criminal record does not automatically disqualify you from volunteering. Please get in touch to discuss your situation.

To apply, you can either:

  1. View current vacancies on Doing Good Leeds and apply via their website
  2. Or simply download and fill out our Expression of Interest form here and email it to us at mindwellleeds@gmail.com.
