
Many people will have heard of postnatal depression – the type of depression experienced after having a baby. What is less talked about is that many women can feel low or struggle with their emotional health during their pregnancy as well.
Pregnancy and becoming a parent is often expected to be a happy and exciting time. But for many people it can also bring worry, overwhelm or difficult emotions. Because of this, some people feel unsure about speaking up – and may delay getting the support they need.
Mental health during pregnancy and the first year after birth is sometimes called perinatal mental health. Difficult feelings during this time are common, and help is available.
If you’re feeling low, anxious or struggling to cope, health professionals are there to support your mental health as well as your physical wellbeing. Talking to your midwife, GP or health visitor as early as possible can help you access the right support sooner.
